IN the performing arts category, the 'live' performance on stage is the deciding factor on picking a winner or a loser. Professionals who cannot compromise on anything less than winning, rehearse this 'live' performance so that it becomes as mundane as breathing to them.
Elocution is one performing art for which students are trained in our school. Effective memorisation of the text, conveying of expressions and emotions effectively on stage, and exuding confidence at the highest level are the pre-reqiuisities to excel in this art.
The English and Hindi elocution contest for the senior section of Boys' High School & College was held on the 5th and 6th of December, 2006. A total of 20 speakers in English and 13 in Hindi took part.
The first to take the stage in English elocution were the students of class XI. Alankar Bhattacharya of class XIA delivered a speech of Andrew Hamilton, followed by others. But the show definitely belonged to Zevio Rodrigues of XID who held the audience spellbound with his delivery of the speech of Bennitto Mussolini and, of course, walked away with the first prize. Prashant Singh of XIC delivered the speech of Edward VIII to earn himself the second position and Shubham Anand of XID was placed third impressing all with Abraham Lincoln's speech.
Then followed the more experienced orators of class XII. Shikhar Bhatt of XIIA, who spoke on 'English is a funny language', was awarded the first prize. Anshul Agarwal of XIID who delivered a speech by Bertrand Russel stood second, while Abhinav Vaish of class XIIE stood third after delivering the speech of Martin Luther King Jr.
In the Hindi elocution, it was difficult for the judges to decide the best three. Each student delivered excellent excerpts and speeches, with near perfection, diction and expression. The matter for all the speeches was strong and thought-provoking. One could not but praise the students for the selection of their subjects.
The credit for the successful training of the students definitely belongs to all the English and Hindi teachers and, of course, to our cultural secretary, Mr A David. Our College Head, Mr V Massey was profuse in his praise for the students. The encouragement for all such activities is, of course, provided by our Principal, Mr. C. V. Innes.
