| The style of speech separates the educated from uneducated and the literate from the illiterate. So, one of the prime purposes of education is to train an individual to speak correctly. Speech training is an essential part of our curriculum. After the intricacies of a language has been learnt, the correctness of pronunciation and clarity in enunciation must be taught. Reading is the first step to speech training. Recitation, a regular feature in the junior section, takes the children a step further. To stimulate the interest in reading and recitation, both in Hindi and in English, elocution contests are held and once a year. Learning to speak clearly, and developing eloquence is not just for the purpose of winning a prize. These assets will have a far reaching effect. Today, a clear voice with the ability to modulate it, can form the base for a career as a TV or radio announcer or even a DJ. The many children of Boys’ High School who practice poems and speeches so enthusiastically, the elocution contest are, in my opinion, all winners although only 116 boys reach the finals, and even fewer carry home a prize. The confidence they acquire in speaking in front of an audience eliminates stage-fright the bane of every participant of the hundred odd participants. We heard on the 25th and 26th of September 07, it was difficult to pick the winners. For this purpose the six judges (three for the Hindi elocution and three for the English elocution) helped us. They were Mrs. Anjali Dhanda, Dr. Y. Tiwari, and Mr. A. Rodrigues for the English Elocution on the 25th of September 07 and Mrs. Malti Tiwari, Mr. V. K. Tiwari and Mr. D. S. Awasthi for the Hindi Elocution on the 26th of September 07.
