The final of the ‘Open Aquatic Championship’ of Boys’ High School (BHS) and College was held at BHS Swimming Pool on Sunday. Bishop Rt Rev Morris Edgar Dan of the Diocese of Lucknow, Church of North India (CNI) was the chief guest. The championship which commenced with much fanfare on July 13 and was inaugurated by the BHS Principal, Mr David Luke.

More than 150 students from ten educational institutions, nine from Allahabad and one from Dehradun, are taking part in the competition. The participating schools are the host, Boys’ High School and College, Holy Trinity School (HTS), Girls’ High School (GHS) and College, St. Joseph’s College (SJC), St. Mary’s Convent (SMC), Delhi Public School (DPS), Maharishi Patanjali Vidya Mandir (MPVM), Bal Shiksha Niketan (BSN), Allahabad Public School (APS) from Allahabad and Welham Boys’ School (WBS) from Dehradun.

The swimming competition among the boys and girls group of class I to XII are being held in five age categories, that is, (i) under 8 years, (ii) under 10 years, (iii) under 12 years, (iv) under 14 years and (v) above 14 years.

Udit Shankar of MPVM created a record in 100 Mts free style in boys above 14 years category by clocking 1:04:12. The earlier record in this category was 1.05:12. He was also adjudged as ‘best swimmer’ as well as the ‘fastest swimmer’ in the boys categories. In the girls above 14 years category, Soumya Anand of GHS broke the earlier record of in 25 Mts breast stroke. Her timings was 22:40 as against earlier record of 22:53. She was also adjudged as the ‘best swimmer’ while Ananya Singh (GHS) was adjudged as the ‘fastest swimmer’. Aryan Gupta of HTS broke the record in 50 Mts free style in boys under 10 category by clocking 39.87 as against the earlier time of 40:37. In the girls under ten category, Shreya Kumar of SMC broke the record in back stroke by clocking 23:94 as against the earlier record of 29:18. A special prize was awarded to Kritika Saraswat of HTS in girls category.

Speaking on this occasion, the chief guest, Bishop Rt Rev Morris Edgar Dan praised the participants for their excellent swimming skills in all categories of strokes. The Bishop laid stress on participation in sports and games and not of just winning the competition. He also encouraged the losers to continue serious practice and to emerge victorious in the next aquatic tournament. He spoke highly for the staff and the swimming coaches and gave kudos for successfully organizing the competition. He blessed the principal, staff members, competitors, and all spectators too. Earlier on the arrival of the chief guest, BHS Principal Mr. David Luke accorded him a warm welcome and in the end, proposed a vote of thanks.

This was followed by the prize distribution function. The prizes were distributed by Mrs Isabella Dan, the First Lady of the Diocese.
