The three-day Inter-institutional cultural festival, ‘Alfresco-2010’, an annual event, organized by the Boys’ High School (BHS) & College to facilitate personality development, confidence building and inter-personal relationships among the students fraternity began with a bang amidst great enthusiasm after the BHS Principal and MLA Mr CV Innes cut the tape and lighted the lamp at the jampacked Flynn Hall on Wednesday.


Nearly 350 enthusiastic boys and girls, from seven schools, all in high spirits to excel at the competitive events – debate, JAM, solo singing, group singing, elocution, dumb charades, what’s the good word, skit, face painting, on the spot painting, solo and duet song, fashion show, basketball and football during the three-day fest were present at the inaugural ceremony.

The participating schools were Girls’ High (GHS) & College, St. John’s Academy (SJA), St. Mary’s Covent (SMC), St. Joseph’s College (SJC), Tagore Public School (TPS), Maharishi Patanjali Vidya Mandir (MPVM) and the host, Boys’ High School (BHS) & College.

In his inaugural address, Mr. CV Innes recalled the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore and dwelt on the issues of self-esteem, honesty and patriotism and how these values were indispensable for success in personal and professional life. He asked the students to compete with utmost dignity and fair play to excel and soar high, as a kite which flies higher against the wind.

He further extended his heartfelt gratitude towards Principals and teachers of the participating schools for taking pains in selecting their students for the various events that will take place during the three-day cultural and sports conclave. He also reminiscenced the contributions of Mr S Pradhan, a retired teacher of SJC for his contribution through his paintings to the rich and vibrant legacy of the school.

After the inaugural function, the debate competition was held followed by solo and group singing. In the debate competition, the top honours for the Best Speaker went to Sambhav Pande (BHS) who spoke for the nation on the topic “Caste based census breeds discrimination”. BHS team (Dainel Menezes, Sambhav Pande) was declared first while GHS team (Shruti Singh and Ratnika Srivastava) came second.

In the solo singing competition, Shobhit Mathur (BHS) and Tushar Singh (SJC) tied for the first place while second spot went to Ragini Mathur (GHS). The third place went to Aneesh (MPVM). In the group singing, SJC came first followed by MPVM and BHS which were placed in the second and third spot respectively.

The function was conducted by Mr. A David, Cultural Secretary. Mr. J Lawrence conducted the opening prayer while Daniel Menezes, Head boy, gave a brief account of the history of Alfresco.
